new weekly feature: mind your music

Alright! 
So, some of you are probably wondering by now how I became so awesome (I am totally joking… I am not really that conceited). Well, If I was being serious about my previous statement, I would have to give 78% of the credit to my amazingly awesome friend, Jenna. Until I met Jenna 6 years ago, I was only listening to Kelly Clarkson and the Dixie Chicks (NOTE: They are excellent musical artists, but my taste has expanded since then). Jenna singlehandedly rocked my world with her bountiful knowledge of quirky and fresh music. And I love her for it. 


So today, friends, I bring to you a new Gingiber blog feature called “Mind Your Music”, curated by none other than Miss Jenna Garrett. I hope that you love it as much as I do! Take it away my little Kumquat (that is my pet name for Jenna… and no, it is not weird at all, I promise!).

Hellooooo, Gingibersnaps! i’m Jenna … official guest blogger here at Gingiber. Aside from being kindred spirits with the Super Stacie Bloomfield, i like finger puppets, well – cooked asparagus, and you. i also like music. And so, upon request from Stacie herself, we give you Mind Your Music. Hopefully i’ll ramble about musicians that everyone fancies, or at least will entertain you a bit. Mostly it will just be what’s humming in my ear phones, and i can’t think of a more perfect one than Pomplamoose.

Who Are They: Word for “Grapefruit” in French, friends Jack and Nataly have recorded this whole album in an upstairs room together, and the result is something that is honest, raw, and sunshine for the ears. Although unsigned, they’ve gotten a lot of attention for their YouTube videos full of split screen shots of all the different elements that they mix together to get that great Pomplamoose sound … all of which are addictive to watch and just so much fun. i like that they don’t take themselves too seriously, and there is nothing better than people who clearly and simply love what they’re doing.

Favorite Songs: Pomplamoose currently has their debut album out on iTunes which i can pretty much listen to on repeat. Favorites include “Centrifuge” and “Expiration Date” which has bits of audio from the black and white Carey Grant film “His Girl Friday” … that alone is reason to adore them!

r is for raccoon

So I have really been experiencing a creative lull the past week. I do not understand how it comes and goes in waves, but I suppose that is life!
When I am not feeling inspired, I get CRANKY! In fact, I was so cranky last week, I all but ruined Mother’s Day….. Thus no special “Mother’s Day Blog Entry”. I need to take a moment to publicly apologize to my sweet family. Thank you for enduring my moody outbursts. You are the best.
Well, I guess a few hours ago I finally had a mini breakthrough…. I made a cute little raccoon print. I was hesitant to call it “R is for Raccoon”, because it means that I will need to follow up with the rest of the alphabet. That is not necessarily a bad thing! I have always wanted to make a kid’s coloring book, so perhaps I could continue the alphabet theme and make a cute little book worthy of a crayola.
On a completely separate note, today my fantastic husband and I spent the day working in the yard and painting. At one point he asked me if I was a “”glerd”. Pretty sure that he meant “gleek” because I love me some Glee! It starts in less than an hour!

rooster days

This weekend I traveled to Tulsa, OK for ROOSTER DAYS! Actually, I went to see my sister and brother-in-law, but we decided to visit the Festival of Roosters anyways…
Funny, I never saw a single rooster.
But, there was a family of cloggers, a pirate ship-type thing, camels, and plenty of fried cheese on a stick (the latter of which I abstained from).
Mother’s Day was alright…. I was kinda a stick in the mud… but I will not trouble you with the details.

it is poll time!

So I have hundreds and hundreds of doodles. Hundreds of ideas just dying to become colorful, lovely prints for my shop. But, sometimes, even though I have the drawings, I struggle with the finished product. I fiddle and tweak, undo and redo… I suppose it is my indecisiveness that is getting the best of me.
I need to focus.
And I need your help!
What new products would you like to see in the Gingiber Etsy Shop? I’ve added a poll in the upper left hand corner of my blog. PLEASE weigh in on what you would like to see. I do aim to please!

Alright.
I admit it.
I watch America’s Next Top Model…. and so does Nathan (that’s right, hubby, if I’m going down, I am bringing you with me)!

exhale

Feeling balanced today…

I feel like I finally exhaled after years of holding my breath. My parents divorce was official this past Wednesday, after 3 long years of separation… 
I suppose that is why I am finally breathing again. 3 years of wishing and hoping that their marriage would turn around. 3 years of being in denial that I am from a “broken home”. I actually feel like an adult now. I think that being an adult when your parents separate is, well, for lack of a better word, gut-wrenching. For quite some time, I was simply wondering…. I felt that my identity was so closely tied to my parents and their superficial happy marriage that when it ended, I was left with nothing but lies.
That sounds harsh, but I am sure a good majority of you out there understand what I am saying. I have to believe that there was a happy time or two during their marriage. I have to believe that I am not responsible for the demise of their relationship. I have struggled with these thoughts for far too long.
But, now I am finally breathing again. I am learning who I am, without them. I have a sweet, gentle husband, a lovely, strong-willed daughter, and a job and a home.
I have always been that person who “over-shares” about the most random aspects of my life. Sometimes I come across as, well, trivial. Sometimes I come across as inappropriate. But, anyone who actually knows me (I hope) understands that I feel things very deeply. I want to relate to people on a real level. I am a very honest person, and with that honestly comes vulnerability. And, by writing this, having a blog… I have become quite vulnerable.
Mom and Dad, if you are reading this post, please do not be offended. Be happy that I am finally healing from the nightmare that we have all endured. This is who I am, and I need to air out my feelings to move on.
Thanks for listening. Talking to an audience of strangers is therapeutic.

Violet’s room is already painted this nice aqua color, so I am trying to create a room that is feminine, but still coordinates with the strong wall color. I am really loving the rose red colors, grounded with splashes of dark brown. Also, years ago I saw the color combo of red, blue, with a nice accent of green in Domino Magazine, and have been dying for a chance to try it out in my own home.

Some items, particularly those from Anthropologie, will serve as inspiration pieces, because I do not think I can afford them at this time.

the etsy storque must like me! my print has been featured!

So I went to check out the Mother’s Day Vote going on over at etsy, only to be SHOCKED with delight to find my print “Those Darling Buds of May” to be the main image for the voting! Go check it out! 
Although my print did not make it into the items to actually be voted on, I am so honored to be featured in this capacity.
